Project Location: Frederick County, MD

Problem: Since 1992 Frederick County has lost over 1,300 acres of forest from development. Forests provide important ecological services such as preventing floods, filtering polluted runoff, cooling streams, fighting climate change, cleaning the air, and creating homes for wildlife.

Project Location: Ellicott City, MD

Problem: During major storm events, an Ellicott City neighborhood located along Hunter Road experienced significant flooding. The stormwater drained into the city’s historic district, and the flooding was exacerbated by the uphill funneling of runoff into the community and Main Street located downstream. Private residential neighborhoods were seeking solutions to help manage the stormwater runoff, and the Howard County government responded by making projects easier and more affordable.

Project Location: Deale, MD

Problem: The Tri-State Marine (TSM) property, a full-service marine business, featured a large, unsightly gravel lot used to store boats and trailers. TSM’s former owners, Tom & Mary Beth Magenau, believed a company relying on a clean, healthy Chesapeake Bay should contribute to projects that help prevent polluted runoff.

Project Location: City of Alexandria, VA

Problem: Lake Cook was constructed in the 1970s as a fishing pond. The site is limited in open space as it is bounded by railroad tracks to the north, the Great Waves Waterpark to the west, and a townhouse development to the east. Visitors had to forge their own trails around the lake in order to fish thereby creating erosion and public safety concerns.

Project Location: Baltimore City, MD

Problem: The 30-acre MedStar Harbor Hospital campus sits on the banks of the Patapsco River adjacent to a public recreational trail in a hyper-urban setting with impervious surfaces covering 18 acres. Every year roughly 20 million gallons of stormwater runoff is discharged directly into the river adding to pollutant totals and water quality issues.
